Boo! Happy Halloween y’all! Due to the last 10 days of visitors, the week long Birthday, and way too much sugar and alcohol, it’s cleanse time! Whenever I feel sluggish or have been having way too much fun, I always take a nice long break-detoxify my body and renurture my cells, which leads me to Halloween. Unfortunately, I’ll be avoiding this year and reflecting on last year thru various pictures I came across, carving pumpkins and or course hooking up all trick or treaters as I have an actual home now! Woo! There’s really nothing like Halloween in NYC so I’m not feeling too bad about missing out. Really looking forward to a very mellow week! Focused on a surprise which I’ll be spilling the beans soon…woopwoop! xxx
Well, I put another dime in the jukebox baby! On Tuesday, The Mercy Lounge welcomed Mr Stephen Malkmus to the stage, and he did not disappoint. Malkmus is an icon to many in the modern and early indie rock era of music. Stephen formed the band Pavement in the early 90’s and has continued to play beautiful, quirky, and at some points chaotic, melodies for years either solo w/ the Jicks or with Pavement. I had the pleasure of discovering and meeting Stephen on a solo tour in Los Angeles a few years ago, and then received the ultimate experience of seeing Pavement perform their reunion/last tour ever opening for Sonic Youth at the Hollywood Bowl. Epic. Tuesday night was awesome, at capacity crowd at the Mercy. I’m really getting used to the idea of amazing shows every week. I’m beyond inspired. Love, love, love it. I can’t wait to see Stephen and the boys again. Thanks Jesper, if I could only get Endless Boogie to reunite in Nashville! (wink) Not a bad night in Nashville when you’re rubbing elbows with some Brit named Robert Plant too. One of my older fav’s by SM is “Jenny and the Ess dog”, a classic.
Oh yeah, some “loser” named Beck produced Malkmus’s new record. No big deal.
For shits and gig’s I’ll throw in an archived photo. Last time I saw Malkmus he opened for this guy. Casper got Thurston to autograph the print after we saw him perform his new solo record in NY!
From the outside Pied Piper looks like any other concrete building with an awning out front. I could have passed this place a hundred times without thinking of going in. The good news is that you can’t scare me with an adventure or a good time. I stepped into the Pied the other afternoon with one thing on my mind….. a quick, cheap and tasty lunch. And I received just that! Pied Piper is not only super friendly it’s a great Americana lunch dive. I had no problem with my Veggie burger, seasoned fries and side salad. The atmosphere is way more Rock n Roll than Country, finally! I dig what Music City thrives on but sometimes a girl just wants to have fun. We sat at the Steve Miller Band table, a beautifully laquered table top with some of the best records by “The Midnight Toker”. It was rad. I think next time I will sit at the Janis table, didn’t see that until we were on our way out. I could practically walk to this place, good to know, especially since it won’t be snowing 60 inches of death in the South this winter!!
The Hutton Hotel may be known for being the best hotel in Nashville and hosting celebs and Country Music Stars, but the real celebrity is at the 1808 Grille downstairs. It is their world famous Cheeseburger. A must when visiting Music City!!!
Coco’s Italian Market, mmmmmmmm. One of the best hidden gems of proper Nashville. Coco’s has the best Meatball sandwich in town and is located on Charlotte Pike. This cozy little restaurant offers affordable Italian food with warm customer service, the latter lacks in Little Italy! If you crave meatballs like I do, be sure to hit up this spot, you won’t be let down. Just look at Casper’s face, that sucker is as big as his head!
NYC invades Nashville for one great night……………………………
I’d like to thank my dear friends in NY for turning me on to Gang Gang Dance. Last week as I was twittling my thumbs and playing with Marty in the backyard, I received notice that one of NY’s best up and coming performance art indie bands was making a visit to The Mercy Lounge. I quickly got excited and couldn’t wait to get to the show. Being away from NY is difficult, but se la vie. I love and appreciate any opportunity I have to still feel a connection to the city, and trust me, I will always be a NY’er! One cool thing I learnerd about this band is that they are one of Thurston Moore’s fav’s!! That man can do no wrong. Being approved by Thurston is just as good as being annointed by Catherine Fulmer, ha! Gang Gang was really cool to see live. Their projection visuals were nice and not over done, the weird asian guy with the turban floated around stage like a moth attracted to a midnight street light, the singer was as eccentric and groovy as the music and the crowd was at great capacity for a touring act. I was thoroughly impressed! Go see Gang Gang Dance and Get Down!!
I forever be in love with authentic Mexican food and Mexican food in general. Whether its a late night drive thru at Del Taco on the West Coast or Taco Tuesday’s at your local carniceria, I can not live without tacos, burritos or tortilla soup for very long. Lemme tell you, homemade and fresh guacamole really warms are gal’s soul! Nashville has a few legit places for your South of the Border cravings but Mas Taco is my #1 right now. Mas Taco is located right in my neighborhood, which is very convenient. The restaurant is run by some of the sweetest, nicest, rock n roll women this side of the Cumberland. I’ve been feeling under the weather recently and I popped in on Monday to try their soup. Lucky me, because they are generally not open on Monday’s, this was their first time. The tortilla soup really hit the spot, our server was so nice and brought me extra broth (on the house ) :)! Nothing is better than hot soup when the Middle TN allergies come to knock you out of society. We ordered the pulled chicken tacos and the quinoa tacos, and they couldn’t have been more delightful. Word to the wise: They operate a Taco Truck on the daily, be sure to check their twitter page for it’s location. This is an East Nashville gem, please support! Especially throughout the week or if you need a caterer for your next Wedding!!! (AV)
Casper’s version of “eating”? Inhaling is more like it. On the table is the Habenero seasoning, Ghost pepper sauce, and Valentina Hot Sauce, which gives Cholula a run for its money.
